In Buddhist logic the word for “synonym” is ekārtha and it means “one object”. For Buddhist logicians every single term has a proper reason to exist. Thus each ekārtha illuminates a little more the questioning of an object. This is a good lesson for Western mentality which tends to consider synonyms as a redundant repetition of meaning.
The spirit of ancient Indian grammarians is visible and congruous with this Buddhist perspective. Ancient Indian grammarians hailed the birth of a new word like the birth of a new (male) son.
